Southern Fly were a london based band who formed in the mid 90s , Simon Scott was the band leader and Vocalist. The band were known for their eclectic mix of styles ,rock with a true groove as shown in this their debut single Monkey Tale

2. Regular Fries - King Kong
Keeping the Monkey theme, King Kong was a single released by London collective Regular Fries , a crazy pysch group of renegades , their songs were a mix of psych jams,hip hop and stoned groove . Should have been massive

3. Delakota - On the Trail
A band formed by the ex Senseless Thing drummer Cass Browne and Des Murphy ,guitarist with Mondo Popless , you would expect some power pop but no its more Stone Roses/Charlatans mash up with hip hop inspired grooves and a dose of psychedelia, On the Trail is massive track.

4. Lo Fidelity All Stars - Kasparov's Revenge
The Lo Fi's were a brighton based group of mates who assumed monikers such as the Wrekked train and albino priest inspired by the wu tang clan. They were fans of the happy mondays and Stone roses but also had a deep love for hip hop,early electro, funk and film soundtracks . Kasparov's Revenge displays that all in one track

5. Campag Velocet - Drencrom Velocet Synthemesc
Campag Velocet were led by Pete Voss , a vocalist who sounded like a ranting street preacher, his lyrics full of references to A Clockwork Orange, the rest of the band were a mix of Ian Cater's shoegaze inspired guitar and the rhythm sections hip hop grooves. Hypnotic stuff

6. The Rain Band - Lucifer
Manchester' s Rain Band formed out of two previous bands from the surrounding area Sussed and That Uncertain Feeling,they took those two bands styles melded them with added tech to make a massive groove ,guitars clash with deep dubby bass and dance inspired drums to create a modern rock sound just before Kasabian ran with the blueprint

7. Mainstream - Can Jam
Mainstream were signed to Nude Records ,the home of Suede and The Auteurs in 1996 but they were no britpop band, they were an amalgamation of The Cult, the Doors and The Charlatans, deep Hammond grooves with proper rock vocals and some guitar fireworks. Can Jam is a big big groove.

8. Pusherman - The Aim Indeed
Pusherman were a south coast 6 piece formed from the ashes of baggy band SKAW, signed to Oasis manager Marcus Russell's ignition label, they were like if The Verve , Jane's Addiction and the Happy Mondays had a baby, massive grooves ,extended psych jams and a distincly druggy atmosphere . The aim indeed truly shows what they were masters at, a truly formidable live band.

9. Orange Can - Wasted Days
Orange Can were two brothers, who got described a lot as sounding very stone roses like but truth is thats a lazy comparision , their albums were more like Pink Floyd with a groove ,big hazy guitar tracks that melded into one another . The debut album entrance high rise which this track is was like one long track interspersed with different styles .

10. Astral - Fly Back
Astral from Glasgow , were undoubtedly influenced by The Verve but they also incorporated a lot of America west coast influences such as the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield, this track is an example of how to do your influences justice and not be a copy and paste , the guitar outro on this track is undeniably epic.

1. Five Thirty - Coming up for Air
Reading 3 piece Five Thirty started off as a mod revival band as young teenagers, by the time they got to releasing records in their early 20s they had turned into a powerful psychedelic power trio and Coming up for the Air displays this perfectly

2. Five Thirty- Catcher in the Rye
Catcher in the Rye showcases Five Thirty's hendrix style tendencies, fierce wah wah and rolling drums . Also Tara Milton's literary lyrics that added an intelligence to bludgeoning delivery of the music.

4. Kinky Machine - Monkey on a string
Monkey on a String from their eponymous debut album shows Kinky Machine's harder edge . This track shows how they were exhilarating live act .

5. Hooker - Cheap Watch
Hooker were Simon Scott's first band before he went on to form Southern Fly who featured in Vol 1. Hooker were a more glam punk proposition, keeping that street level mod vibe of the previous tracks, Cheap Watch was their debut 7 inch release .

6. Hooker - Junkie Jack
Junkie Jack is an unreleased demo by Hooker , showcasing their in your face rock n roll style . A lost gem

7. Jaguar - Rubber Band
Jaguar were another power trio , later forced to rename themselves Carson after singer songwriter Malcolm Carson because there was already a Jaguar somewhere . Another band who had hendrixisms paired with great britpop melodies and big choruses as displayed here on a b side

8. Jaguar - Ring Road around your heart
Another b side unbelievably, more great melodies and guitar slinging . The 90s were really the era of the great b side . This is another fine example .

9. These Animal Men - 24 Hours to Live
These Animal Men were part of the new wave of the new wave , a meaningless scene concocted by the music press which was basically a group of bands who actually had mod/punk sensibilities. This track shows the band at what they did best , speed freak rock n roll , the Who on amphetamines

10. These Animal Men - April 7th
Another example of their frenetic rock n roll from the 2nd album Accident and Emergency. A band with an image and a manifesto, they meant it.

11. SMASH - Another Love
Another band who were lumped in the new wave of the new wave . A punky three piece , they seemed like they could fall apart at any point onstage but it was all part of their charm, they were actually exceptional musicians and this track shows their fire and skill.

12. SMASH - Drugs Again
Keeping a similar theme to the previous track. They smash through this track with true passion that you don't see that much these days .

13. Spitfire - Hey go Easy
A band from Crawley , that i saw blow Blur off stage back in the day , a real gang Clad in black giving off pure mc5 vibes mixed with some Hendrix wah wah licks . This is rock n roll

16. Orange Deluxe - Plush Abattoir
Showing their funky side ,this is a great b side . Pure guitar pop with an edge

18. The Hybirds - See Me Through
This was one of the bands singles released via Heavenly Records ,an heartfelt paen to the power of music containing a ripping guitar solo.

20. Mantaray - Trust to Fate
To think this song was just a b side. A great little psych pop gem. Chris Latter was a great lyricist and knew his way around a tune. Bassist David Standen added some cool mod points and on this track some suitably psychedelic rolling bass.

21. My Jealous God - In Her Eyes
London's My Jealous God were led by Jim Melly , an unashamed massive Jam fan, his band were rather unfairly lumped in with the madchester scene in 1990 but the band were really a mod rock trio on this b side however there is definitely echoes of Roger Mcguinn's rickenbacker a la Eight Miles High
